Anthropic has started watermarking text generated by Claude. The feature is invisible to the reader, embedded in the statistical patterns of the output itself, and designed to let platforms and regulators identify AI-generated content after the fact. It sounds like exactly the kind of responsible infrastructure the industry needs.
I'm not convinced it is.
Not because the intention is wrong. The intention is fine. But the gap between what watermarking promises and what it can actually deliver is wide enough to matter, especially for agencies, platforms, and anyone building products on top of these models. If you're using Claude in a client-facing workflow, this is worth understanding properly rather than filing away as someone else's compliance problem.
